Only about 500 people live in Russin, but during the festival it feels like the whole region comes to visit. The streets fill with people, music and decorated floats, and the quiet village turns into one big celebration. This parade is very different from the big city parades. Huge tractors and even lawn mowers drive through the streets. There is hay everywhere, traditional costumes, music and songs that both the performers and the crowd join in. People on the floats give grapes, wine and local products to the spectators. Sometimes they throw hay into the crowd, and sometimes even spray foam. At some point, it becomes hard to tell who is watching and who is already part of the parade. Everyone laughs, sings and keeps shouting “Santé!” That is probably what makes the festival in Russin so special. It does not feel like a big staged show. It feels like a real village celebration where everyone takes part — winegrowers, musicians, local groups, families and visitors. For one weekend, they all come together to celebrate the new harvest, local wine and the traditions of the Geneva countryside. Fête des Vendanges Huge flower-covered floats rolled through the city, but the flowers were only part of the spectacle. Some of the floats became moving stages, with performers putting on their own shows right in the middle of the parade. Then came the musicians, colourful costumed groups, vehicles firing clouds of confetti into the crowd, and even fire performances. What made the parade especially fun was how much the performers interacted with the spectators. Some handed out little treats, others stopped for selfies, came right up to the crowd and even let people touch the details of their costumes. It never really felt like a show happening somewhere in the distance — the parade kept spilling into the audience. And there is one little mystery… did one of the musical groups actually appear in the parade twice? 😄 It certainly looks that way. See if you can spot them!
