Sihlwald: A Wild Forest Near Zurich

Zürich

If you feel like taking a break from the bustle of the city, enjoying a peaceful walk through beautiful scenery, and breathing in astonishingly fresh air, then Sihlwald is a place you absolutely have to visit.

Sihlwald is one of the most unusual forests in Switzerland. It is located not far from Zurich and is considered the largest natural deciduous forest on the Swiss Plateau, left to develop almost without human intervention. Since the 1990s, virtually no forestry activity has taken place here: trees fall, decompose, and new ones grow — just as they would in a truly wild forest.

Today, Sihlwald is part of the Wildnispark Zürich nature park and one of the most popular hiking destinations for residents of Zurich and nearby towns.

Hiking in Sihlwald

Sihlwald is an ideal place for a peaceful hike. There are many routes of varying lengths here, from short walks to full-day treks. The trails feel more like well-maintained paths through a wild forest. Many of the routes run along the Sihl River. Along the way, you can find small wooden bridges and scenic viewpoints. The entire atmosphere of Sihlwald creates a sense of true wilderness while still remaining comfortable for visitors.

Getting to Sihlwald is easy. The Zürich S-Bahn S4 suburban rail line runs directly from the center of Zurich to Sihlwald.

What You Can See

In Sihlwald, you can encounter not only beautiful landscapes but also animals. In the neighboring part of the park — Wildnispark Langenberg — native Swiss wildlife can be seen, including European bison, wolves, red deer, wild boar, and lynx.

The animals live in large natural enclosures, and observing them is completely free of charge.

In the forest itself, you may also come across roe deer, foxes, woodpeckers, rare forest insects, plants, and mushrooms.

When to Visit

Sihlwald is beautiful at any time of year, but each season offers its own unique experience.

In spring (April–May), you can see many streams, spring flowers, wild garlic patches, and hear birds singing. Since the trees have not yet developed their full canopy, many small wetlands and streams within the forest remain visible.

In summer (June–August), the forest becomes dense and green, and its coolness can be felt even on hot days. There are many designated picnic and barbecue areas, making it a wonderful place to spend time with family and friends.

Autumn (September–October) is the most beautiful time in Sihlwald. The forest turns golden and red, creating a magical atmosphere and incredibly colorful scenes for photography.

In winter (December–February), Sihlwald transforms into a winter fairytale. Quiet snowy trails, the tracks of wild animals, and an almost complete absence of people make it especially enchanting.

Why It Is Worth Visiting

Sihlwald is a rare place where you can experience true wilderness right next to a major city. Just 25 minutes from Zurich, and you find yourself in a forest that looks much as it did hundreds of years ago. Sihlwald is easy to reach both by public transport and by car. Near Sihlwald railway station, there is a large, well-equipped parking area. The routes throughout Sihlwald are fully prepared and well maintained. A trail map can be found at the station, showing all seasonal routes and the points of interest along the way that are worth seeing and visiting. There are many signposts along the trails, as well as information boards about trees and forest animals. There are equipped picnic and barbecue areas. And there are extraordinarily beautiful spots for photo sessions.

Sihlwald is an excellent place for a peaceful hike, nature observation, photography, or simply a short weekend getaway.

Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the trails can be wet and slippery after rain. Bring water and a light snack, especially if you are planning a longer route. It is best to go in the morning: there are fewer people, the forest is quieter, and you have a better chance of seeing animals. For beautiful photos, it is best to visit in autumn or early in the morning in spring. For picnics, use only the designated areas. Bring tick repellent and check your clothing after your walk during the warmer season.
