Traveling with Children: Creating Lifelong Memories and Adventures

·

Many times during travels with children, I hear phrases like: “Why do you take them with you?”, “They won’t remember anything anyway,” or “How can you relax with them? It’s just noise all around.”
For me, these are strange phrases, questions, and attitudes from people who leave their children with grandparents, send them to camps, or leave them at home with nannies, taking away the magical moments of childhood from their kids.
Whether to take children on trips or not is a personal decision that depends on your goals, itinerary, and your family’s needs.

Why should you take children?

We don’t take children on trips to ensure they remember every detail or to expect them to be grateful for it for the rest of their lives. Traveling is incredibly beneficial for children. It broadens their horizons, helps them learn about new cultures, languages, and traditions, and teaches them adaptability and tolerance. This is a wonderful experience that allows children to learn a lot through practice and understand how the world works.

Family trips strengthen bonds, creating unique memories that last a lifetime. Even overcoming difficulties will eventually feel like a fun adventure that brought the family closer together and taught everyone how to face challenges. This makes children stronger and more capable of dealing with life’s problems.

If you’re traveling to places with beautiful nature, it helps children appreciate the environment and learn responsibility for its protection. It gives them a break from the hustle of daily life, an opportunity to rest their eyes, breathe fresh air, and boost their immune system, as well as develop survival skills for any condition.

Many children find joy in new places, adventures, and activities, whether it’s zoos, water parks, or walks through historic sites. They soak up the emotions and channel their energy and curiosity into positive directions. Additionally, many adults would never visit certain places if it weren’t for their children.

When should you leave children at home?

Of course, not all trips are suitable for children. Sometimes, it’s better to leave them behind, especially if the trip involves long flights, extreme conditions, or unstable situations, as this could stress the child. Very young children may struggle with long flights or transfers, while teenagers might prefer to stay home with friends.

If the purpose of the trip is professional business, having children along might limit you. Traveling with children can also be significantly more expensive due to additional tickets, accommodations, and meals. However, this is often not an issue, as many destinations encourage family travel by offering family rates, free entry for children accompanied by adults, or other discounts.

How to make traveling with children comfortable?

Plan your trip in advance, taking into account your children’s interests and choosing destinations with child-friendly infrastructure. Bring along their favorite toys, snacks, a tablet, or books for entertainment. If your child requires a specific diet, ensure that their food needs are met for the entire trip. Schedule time for rest and be prepared for unexpected changes to your itinerary.

Research potential illnesses common in the destination you’re visiting and pack necessary medications that might be useful for your child.

Talk to your child about the trip, explaining where you’re going, what places they can visit, and what they might see. If your child is old enough, encourage them to read about the destination and choose places they would find interesting to visit. Sometimes, traveling with children allows you to discover even more fascinating things together.

Where to travel with children?

  • It’s better to choose destinations with well-developed family-friendly infrastructure:

    • Europe: Germany (Bavarian castles, Europa-Park), France (Disneyland, Paris), Italy (Rome with the Colosseum, Venice).

    • North America: USA (Disneyland in Florida and California, Universal Studios theme parks), Canada (national parks).

    • Scandinavia: Finland (Santa Claus Village), Sweden (Astrid Lindgren’s World).

    • Asia: Japan (Tokyo Disneyland, Kyoto), Singapore (zoo, Gardens by the Bay).

  • Beach destinations are also great for children:

    • Turkey: Numerous family-friendly hotels with animation programs and pools.

    • Cyprus and Greece: Warm waters, calm beaches, and a welcoming atmosphere.

    • Thailand: Resorts like Phuket or Krabi, with child-friendly attractions and beaches.

  • Children also love nature-focused trips:

    • National Parks: USA (Yellowstone), Canada (Banff), Switzerland (the Alps).

    • Safaris in safe locations: South Africa, Kenya (with proper preparation).

    • Lakes and mountains: Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia.

  • Educational and cultural trips can also be highly engaging:

    • Museums with children’s exhibitions, like the Louvre (with kids’ tours), the Natural History Museum in London, or the Science Museum in Munich.

  • And, of course, cruises:

    • Companies like Disney Cruise Line or MSC offer family programs and amenities.

Where not to travel with children?

  • It’s best to avoid choosing extreme or dangerous destinations for traveling with children:

    • Mountain expeditions (e.g., Himalayas without proper preparation).

    • Destinations with unstable political situations or high crime rates.

  • It’s best to avoid places with harsh climatic conditions:

    • Very cold regions (Antarctica) or overly hot deserts (e.g., Sahara) without proper protection.

  • It’s better to avoid trips with long flights without adequate breaks:

    • For example, far-off destinations if children struggle with jet lag.

  • Exotic countries with a high risk of disease are also not recommended for children:

    • Countries with increased risks of malaria, yellow fever, or other infections, especially if children aren’t vaccinated or ready.

  • Children don’t always enjoy noisy and overcrowded megacities:

    • Some large cities with high air pollution levels, like Delhi or Beijing, can be challenging for young children.

  • It’s not advisable to stay for long in places with insufficient infrastructure:

    • Remote villages or regions where medical help or suitable food is hard to find.

Choose routes that allow the whole family to relax comfortably, minimizing stress and inconvenience.

The decision to take children on a trip depends on many factors. If you are ready for extra preparation and flexibility, traveling with children can become an amazing experience for the entire family and an unforgettable adventure for the kids.

Remember, children enjoy traveling much more than adults. They don’t care about the cost or the destination. What matters to them is spending time with their beloved parents, experiencing new impressions, and feeling the emotions of adventure.
